Restoring the Old Weaver's Loom

It began with a dusty morning and a curious child.

Our youngest had been exploring the rafters of the storage attic—a place we had always promised to sort through but never quite managed. She came downstairs covered in cobwebs, eyes wide, dragging behind her what appeared to be a wooden beam. It was, we soon realised, the main shaft of a loom. A large, traditional one. At least a hundred years old by our best estimate.

The Community Effort

Word spread quickly, as word does in a small village. By afternoon, three elders had gathered to inspect the find. Dadi Kamla, who is eighty-two and still walks to the spring every morning, ran her fingers over the carved wood and smiled. "My mother's mother's," she said quietly.

Over the following two weeks, the loom was reassembled piece by piece. Missing components were fashioned from local sal wood by Ramesh, who is not a carpenter by training but has a craftsman's instinct. The warp threads were re-strung using techniques that Dadi Kamla demonstrated from memory.

The Sound Returns

The first cloth woven on the restored loom was a simple stripe—natural undyed wool and mountain indigo. Nothing extraordinary to look at. But the sound it made—that rhythmic, deep clack of the shuttle finding its groove—was something we had not heard in decades.

The children sat in a semicircle and watched without being asked.

We are now planning a series of weaving workshops for the youth in the coming months. The loom, it turns out, is not just a machine. It is a classroom.
