Why We Say "Family," Not Hostel

Why We Say "Family," Not Hostel

When people first hear about Sondhar, they often describe it as a "hostel" or "boarding school." We understand why — those are the familiar frames. But we gently correct it, every time.

We do not run a hostel.

What a Hostel Is

A hostel is a place where children are housed. Meals are served, beds are made, rules are followed. There is supervision. There may even be kindness. But at its core, a hostel is a system — structured to manage a number of children efficiently.

That is not what we are building.

What Family Means Here

At Sondhar, every child is known by name — and more than name. We know which child wakes up anxious before exams. We know who becomes quiet when they miss their parents. We know who needs encouragement to eat, and who finishes everyone else's serving.

This is not a database. This is what it means to raise a child.

The Difference in Practice

A hostel has "wardens." Sondhar has caretakers who stay awake when a child is unwell.

A hostel has "mess timings." Sondhar has mealtimes where we sit together and talk about the day.

A hostel has "rules." Sondhar has values — taught through example, not enforcement.

What This Requires of Us

The family model asks more of the people who run it. It means you cannot switch off at the end of a shift. A child does not stop being your responsibility because the clock says so.

We are asking our caretakers, volunteers, and staff to give something that cannot be measured in hours: presence, warmth, and genuine care.

Why We Think It Matters

Children who grow up feeling managed, rather than loved, carry that into their adult lives. They learn to perform for institutions rather than to flourish as people.

We want something different for the children at Sondhar. We want them to grow up knowing that someone, somewhere, chose to stand beside them — not because they were assigned to, but because they cared.

That is what family means. That is what we are building.

With warmth, The Sondhar Trust Team
